Product Image Checklist for Online Marketplaces
Review resolution, aspect ratio, file size, and safe areas before uploading.
Product images influence trust before a shopper reads the description. A technically valid file can still perform poorly if the product is small, inconsistent, or difficult to understand. Use this checklist before publishing a marketplace listing.
Start with the marketplace canvas
Confirm the current aspect ratio, minimum resolution, maximum file size, and accepted format for the target marketplace. Requirements can vary by category and placement. Prepare a master image at a higher resolution, then create marketplace-specific exports rather than repeatedly resizing a compressed file.
Make the product easy to evaluate
Show the complete product with balanced space around it. Keep the background clean and ensure the main image represents what the buyer receives. Additional images can explain scale, packaging, details, variants, and use cases. Avoid badges or text that covers important features.
Use consistent lighting, crop, and color across a product range. Inconsistent white balance can make identical colors appear different and increase returns. Compare the exported image with the physical item on more than one screen when color accuracy matters.
Check the thumbnail view
Shrink the image to the approximate size used in search results. The product should remain recognizable and visually distinct from competitors. Fine text and small accessories that disappear at thumbnail size belong in a supporting image, not the primary listing image.
Export and inspect
Use JPG for most photographic images and PNG when transparency or sharp graphic edges are essential. Compress carefully and inspect for halos, banding, or blurred labels. Name files consistently so the team can identify product, angle, color, and version without opening every image.
